We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
