Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
