Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
