Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
